Honors Student Center & Lounge Intern (Fall or Spring)

Goal: Promote student engagement & use of the Honors Student Center and Lounge by planning and hosting weekly events/activities in each program pillar; generating and disseminating promotional materials such as flyers; decorating the Honors Student Center with curated Honors student art and exhibits; managing requests to reserve space; and creating a fun, inviting environment for Honors students to study, collaborate, and mingle. 

Tasks:
  • Propose, promote, budget for, and host weekly (or biweekly) events/activities in the Honors Student Center and Lounge.
  • Maintain and update flyers, announcements, and other promotional materials for events being held in the Honors Lounge, including updating postings to the Honors Google Calendar and to Events@Fredonia.
  • Devise creative ways to promote the Honors lounge and community to current Honors students.
  • Help manage reservations for the Honors lounge and student office. 
  • Decorate the Honors lounge by gathering student-made art pieces (rotating decorations regularly).
  • Store, track, help plan for purchases and restocking of consumable supplies.

Projects:
  • Host/lead at least 10 events/activities, typically once a week starting at the beginning of semester.
  • Arrange opportunities for Honors faculty to host discussion sessions in the Honors lounge.
  • Create and distribute follow up surveys to demonstrate effectiveness or updates to consider (based upon university mission, Honors mission, career readiness, etc.)
  • Design promotions in keeping with publicity laws and add upcoming events to the Events@Fredonia calendar platform on the Fredonia website, as well as to the Honors Program Google Calendar

Qualifications:
  • Be a current member of the Honors Program
  • Be reliable and communicative ahead of deadlines
  • Be able to work independently and collaboratively while still being reliable and practicing good communication to ensure invested parties and colleagues are kept informed of daily activity
  • Be a (rising) sophomore or junior.
  • Able to manage multiple tasks and timeliness simultaneously
  • Have an outgoing, collaborative disposition and growth mindset
  • Have an active desire to improve the program and to contribute ideas and research

  • Responsiveness to email, or virtual feedback, and requests or edits in a timely fashion
This role is unpaid; however, a student successfully completing this applied-learning experience and meeting all the requirements of an Honors Program Learning Contract may substitute this internship for any one required Honors course.

Details about the role:
  • 80 to 120 hours total during the 17-week semester
  • Approximately 5-6 or 8-10 hours per week, depending on whether pursuing 2 or 3 credits
  • To have this experience substitute for one Honors course, the student intern must complete at least 80 hours/2 credits and maintain a weekly learning journal, give a public presentation, and complete a substantive final paper, project, or portfolio connected to the experience.
